An Exclusive Interview With 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards Winner Cathy Thorne Of Everyday People

Cathy Thorne authors the 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards winner Everyday People, which placed 2nd in Comics.

Why blogging? Why did you start blogging, and what drives you now?

I started blogging because I thought it might be another good way to get my cartoons out there.

How did you get into drawing and writing cartoons? Is art something you started creating early, or did you come to it later on?

I've been drawing, writing and making things since I can remember. Cartooning came to me in my thirties in art school. I wanted to write as much as I wanted to draw, and when I did, these cartoons just came out of me.

How does blogging affect your creativity?

I doesn't. It's just another way to get my cartoons to as many people as possible.

Where do you find ideas for your content? If you are feeling less than inspired, where do you look for inspiration?

As I go about my life, every time I have a remotely interesting idea I jot it down on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and file it away. I must have 400 of these papers in my cabinet. Some are a decade old, a few are fairly elaborate, but most of them contain just a sentence or two with a scribble for a drawing. I go through the stack when I'm looking for ideas to flesh out. I rarely search for ideas purposefully, but when I do I look through magazines, newspapers, and web sites.

Are you open about being a blogger? How do people offline react to your online writing?

Some people really like my work and are very vocal about it. I assume the people who don't say anything aren't fans.

Which weblogs are your current favourites? Which weblogs have been most influential in the shaping of your own blogging?

I read Rina Piccolo's blog regularly and have read tidbits of some popular and obscure bloggers, but I mostly go for the cartoons like Savage Chickens, Velia, Dear, Fisher, and Em Cartoons.

What advice do you have for new bloggers?

Know why you're blogging, because only then will you know if you're succeeding. You won't get sucked into how many people follow you or like you. If you're blogging to express yourself creatively, and you're doing so, does it really matter whether 10 000 or 100 people ignore your posts on Twitter?

Nominees of the Day: Comics

2010 Canadian Weblog Awards NomineeThe 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards nominees of the day today are from our Comics category.

Due to its specificity, the Comics category is still quite small, but don't let size fool you. It packs a punch. This is my go-to list of weblogs when I want to be entertained.

Check out these gems and leave comments to let the authors know you came by:

The Crafty Life
Dinosaur Comics
Everyday People
Fresh and Tasty
Hark! A Vagrant
A Softer World
Weregeek
The Writing Womb

Do you know of another Canadian web comic? Nominate it in the 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards and let the rest of us know!

Humour & Comics Has Been Split Into Two Separate Categories

As the 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards have moved along through their first forty days, it has become apparent that the original Humour & Comics category needed to change.

Humour is always humourous. It's ha-ha funny. Comics? Not always, and comics are always illustrated in some manner. Humour? Not always. So, humour weblogs are now in the new Humour category, and webcomics are now in the new Comics category, and we can all stop being confused about how to judge drawings against knock-knock jokes.

If you were in the old Humour & Comics category, there are now two new badges to choose from:

And now the Comics category looks like this:
Everyday People
A Softer World
Weregeek

And now the Humour category looks like this:
A Blog Named Soo
Eject
Mr. Teacher Man
One Thing I Did Today
Postcards from the Mothership
The Problem with Young People Today Is...

If you know of any excellent Canadian weblogs that fit into either category, nominate them in either the Comics or the Humour category in the 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards!
