Cathy Thorne authors the 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards winner Everyday People, which placed 2nd in Comics.
Why blogging? Why did you start blogging, and what drives you now?
I started blogging because I thought it might be another good way to get my cartoons out there.
How did you get into drawing and writing cartoons? Is art something you started creating early, or did you come to it later on?
I've been drawing, writing and making things since I can remember. Cartooning came to me in my thirties in art school. I wanted to write as much as I wanted to draw, and when I did, these cartoons just came out of me.
How does blogging affect your creativity?
I doesn't. It's just another way to get my cartoons to as many people as possible.
Where do you find ideas for your content? If you are feeling less than inspired, where do you look for inspiration?
As I go about my life, every time I have a remotely interesting idea I jot it down on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and file it away. I must have 400 of these papers in my cabinet. Some are a decade old, a few are fairly elaborate, but most of them contain just a sentence or two with a scribble for a drawing. I go through the stack when I'm looking for ideas to flesh out. I rarely search for ideas purposefully, but when I do I look through magazines, newspapers, and web sites.
Are you open about being a blogger? How do people offline react to your online writing?
Some people really like my work and are very vocal about it. I assume the people who don't say anything aren't fans.
Which weblogs are your current favourites? Which weblogs have been most influential in the shaping of your own blogging?
I read Rina Piccolo's blog regularly and have read tidbits of some popular and obscure bloggers, but I mostly go for the cartoons like Savage Chickens, Velia, Dear, Fisher, and Em Cartoons.
What advice do you have for new bloggers?
Know why you're blogging, because only then will you know if you're succeeding. You won't get sucked into how many people follow you or like you. If you're blogging to express yourself creatively, and you're doing so, does it really matter whether 10 000 or 100 people ignore your posts on Twitter?
