Blogging How To – Copyright, Fair Use/Fair Dealing, And Hotlinking: What You Need To Know

I recently had content republished without my permission, and I thought I'd share what I learned — "Copyright, Fair Use/Fair Dealing, And Hotlinking: What You Need To Know":
Janssen finally removed my article from BlogsCanada.ca after I sent my second e-mail request for him to do so. He has let me know that he will no longer link to the Canadian Weblog Awards and will now only publicize the Canadian Blog Awards, which is another weblog awards program in Canada that is run by popular vote.

We at the Canadian Weblog Awards are more than fine with this arrangement, but we do think that it is extremely important for Allan Janssen at BlogsCanada.ca and everyone else, for that matter, to have at least a general clue about what copyright and fair use are and how to go about republishing works by other authors both on and off the internet.

The Bloggies are the largest and longest-running weblog awards out there, dating back to 2001, and it's now time to put our votes in for the our 2011 faves.

They have a Canadian weblog category and have chosen five fabulous weblogs to represent us in the 2011 Bloggies. Our sincerest congratulations go out to the following nominees:

    Holding Onto My Hat

I will be announcing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the first ever Canadian Weblog Awards tonight, and I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED. I am trying to concentrate on tabulating the last of the jurors' scores, but it's all I can do to keep from bouncing around my apartment until I make the announcement tonight at 12:00 a.m. EST.

The announcement tonight is the culmination of more than a year of dreaming big, a lot of hard work, and an incredible amount of support and encouragement from the blogging community both here in Canada and abroad, and I am both humbled and honoured to find the awards at the end of their first year and perched on the precipice of 2011.

Before I dive back into spreadsheets and HTML and hundreds of weblogs, I just want to thank you, every one of you, whether you be readers or bloggers, for creating this huge and diverse community that is Canadian blogging.

    Thank you.

See you tonight with our first ever group of 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards winners!

After a Summer Vacation, We're Back and At It

Well, well, well. I was digging back into working on entering the nominations for these awards, and, wouldn't you know it, it has been well over a month since I updated here. Never fear, though! This was but a summer vacation, and the awards are moving ahead as planned. I am entering new nominations, gathering jurors, and reading tons and tons of good Canadian weblog content along the way.

The Canadian Weblog Awards schedule runs as follows:

  • January 1st through October 31st – Nominations are accepted.
  • November 1st through November 30th – Jurors will apply the criteria to choose the top ten weblogs in each category.
  • December 1st – The top ten nominees will be announced.
  • January 1st, 2011 – The judges will announce the best three weblogs in each category.

  • So, I'm going to get back to entering the new nominations and finding jurors, and you can keep reading great Canadian content.

    Later!

Juror and Nominee, Attack of the Redneck Mommy, Wins a Bloggie!

Tanis MillerOur very own 2010 Canadian Weblog Awards juror and now nominee in both the Family & Parenting and Life categories, Tanis Miller, has won Best Canadian Blog in the 2010 Bloggies with her weblog Attack of the Redneck Mommy!

It was announced on twitter that I won a Bloggie for Best Canadian blog. A hockey gold and a Bloggie? I knew I should have bought a lotto ticket when I went to the store earlier in the day.

We are fairly gushing with pride over here.

THE REDNECK. MOMMY. WON. A BLOGGIE.

Head on over and congratulate her on her good news. She deserves it, even if she does have that weird Billy Ray Cyrus fetish. Rednecks.
